Green for less: Water-saving solutions that make dollars and sense

3165338948_0338629c02_m

No matter the size of your household, you're probably flushing and washing away far more water than you need to. But as utility prices and seasonal water needs climb while drought thresholds fall, the EPA is giving both you and Mother Earth a break with a relatively new WaterSense labeling program that signals super-water-saving solutions.

WaterSense is basically the same as the Energy Star labeling program for appliances and electronics. By making just a few WaterSense-approved changes in your home, you can cut around $170 from the typical annual $500 water bill. By choosing WaterSense fixtures, you can expect a household water savings of 30 percent or more.

Bathroom sink faucets: Faucets and accessories such as faucet aerators can reduce standard flow by more than 30 percent without sacrificing performance. Water-saving showerheads: Showers are the third-largest source of household water waste, and since trimming the family shower schedule is pretty much impossible, installing a water-saving shower head is the best way to keep from getting soaked by high water bills.

Do laundry in the cold
Don't take cold showers, but we do suggest washing your duds in cold water, which expends roughly half as much energy as hot rinses. To save even more when doing the wash and fold: do laundry at night (during “off-peak” billing hours) and clean out the lint tray before starting the dryer.

Air Quality Awareness Week April 27 - May1st

Airaware-day1

Visit: http://www.epa.gov/airnow/airaware/

EPA uses a color-coded guide: green means the air quality is good, red means it’s unhealthy for everyone to breathe. You can check it on the Internet, sign up for daily emails, or check out your local weather report.

Cities across the country also have Air Quality Action Days. These days tell you when you should reduce your contribution to pollution. One of he easiest ways to do that is to leave the car at home. You can take public transportation or carpool.

Poor air quality can happen year-round, so no matter when you’re outside, check the AQI.
