New Rules for Water Conservation

Local officials say community members are the number one culprits when it comes to water overuse.

Water Management officials are proposing new rules to help meet water needs for our region.

Local communities are urged to conserve water.

Asking a car wash company not to use a lot of water can sound impossible.

But, employees at one Live Oak detailing shop are trying to do their part.

Car detailer Bernard Dix said, "We use pressure washing machines here so that the water is not continuously running and we try to use high or low output valves so we're just not overusing the water."

To meet future water needs, officials at the Suwannee River Water Management District are proposing new rules for water use permits.

Water management officials propose only allowing homeowners and businesses to water lawns once a week during December through February, and twice weekly during March through November.

In any case, irrigation would be prohibited between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Live Oak resident Reginald Sperring said, "I generally water mine at night anyway. It comes on at 4:30 in the morning. It don't all evaporate like in the daytime."

Officials say you can also conserve water inside your home if you fix leaky faucets and toilets, don't use your toilet as a trash can, buy water-efficient appliances, and maximize your laundry wash loads.
