In April, Dalton Utilities provided third-grade classrooms in Dalton Public Schools and Whitfield County Schools, Christian Heritage and area private schools with a resource packet on water conservation. The packets contained rain gauges, water usage wheels and lesson plans for teachers, as well as activity pages and other engaging learning aids for students.
This program, I’m in the Know About H2O, was designed to help students understand that water is an essential and limited resource and what each of us can do to protect and conserve water in a fun and interactive atmosphere. Tips the children are learning about to conserve water include not letting water run when brushing teeth or washing your face; asking parents to fix leaks; washing full loads of laundry and dishes; watering your lawn and plants only once a week; and turning off sprinklers when it’s raining.
“Water awareness and conservation education are particularly relevant to residents of Dalton and Whitfield County in light of the recent drought,” said Lori McDaniel, spokeswoman for Dalton Utilities. “The goal of this program is to promote simple conservation habits that can be incorporated into everyday life. We want to use every method we can to help spread the word about the need for water conservation. We believe that through this program, children will be able to encourage their families and friends to conserve. The primary focus of the student packets is to show what children can actually do to help conserve and protect our water resources. Our vision is to introduce students to new ideas, options and solutions, so they will conserve and protect water for the future.”
As part of the program, students submitted artwork that highlighted why it is important to save water. The artwork was judged by Rachel Brown, staff writer with The Daily Citizen; Terry Tomasello, executive director of the Creative Arts Guild; and Leanne Lawson, Creative Arts Guild manager.
Contest winners are Danna Cano of Kathy Newberry’s class at City Park School (first place), Chloe Medlin of Libby Satterfield’s class at Varnell Elementary (second place) and Pablo Rodriguez of Leigh Anne Smith’s class at Brookwood Elementary (third place).
